Short Drama (17 min) | Becs Arahanga (Kai Tahu/Ngati Raukawa)
On the day she gets her first menses, Hinekura is initiated into adulthood with ceremony and blessings. She’s taken to a wananga where her role within the tribe is revealed to her.
Becs Arahanga : I have been working in the film industry, on and off for 16 years. Initially I did wardrobe and other roles on films, before going off and spending five years getting my Bachelor of Health Science in Acupuncture degree where I graduated at the top of my class. To date I have written and directed three short films since Nov 2016. Laundry, which I wrote and directed at the end of 2016 was my first go at film making. Laundry made it into NZIFF Best Shorts and Show Me Shorts, where it was nominated for four awards. Best Edit, Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Film. Since then I have written and directed my second short film, Hinekura, which is a pre- colonial coming of age story around NZ Maori’s ancient practices and ceremony during the first time of menses.
