Shatterbox Season 4

Shatterbox Season 4

Deadline:
Monday, September 9, 2019

Refinery29 and Level Forward are joining forces for another season of SHATTERBOX, the award-winning short film series born four years ago as a rallying cry to counteract the lack of opportunities for female directors. Our previous seasons of shorts saw great success with filmmakers like Yara Shahidi, Gillian Jacobs, Jessica Sanders, Ivy Agregan, Kristen Stewart, and Gabourey Sidibe many of whom had films premiere at Sundance, Cannes, SXSW, the New York Film Festival with Anu Valia’s timely short Lucia, Before and After taking home the Jury Prize for Best U.S. Fiction Short at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

Today, championing gender parity in storytelling on and off the screen has never been so urgent. According to recent analysis by TheWrap, “only 3.3 percent of the films scheduled for release this year by the six major Hollywood studios have a female director — the lowest percentage in at least five years,” showing there is still so much work to be done. Instigating cultural conversations that represent inclusive and diverse points of view – a shared mission between R29 and Level Forward – is becoming an increasingly essential part of social movements and broader societal change

The SHATTERBOX shorts have made their way to audiences around the world; they have premiered at Cannes, Sundance, SXSW, and Palm Springs Film Festivals, have been viewed via R29’s online community of 500 million, and most recently aired on television network TNT. And there’s still places to go!

Level Forward’s commitment to advancing story-driven and impact-minded work that extends the influence of creative excellence defines this new breed entertainment company and our partnership. At the core of Level Forward’s work is a fundamental belief that commercial success can be used to satisfy underserved audiences, reward storytellers and investors, and advance the greater good.
